March 31, 2020 Dieterich Unit #30 School Closure Update School closure has been extended through April 30th. School staff has been working diligently to plan and prepare a Remote Learning Plan to meet the educational needs of our students. The District’s Remote Learning Plan can be found in the Document section on the website, dieterichschools.org. Remote Learning will begin on Monday, April 6th. Remote Learning Days differ from the Act of God Days, which we have been working under since March 17th. Remote Learning has several objectives: 1. Provide instruction without face-to-face interaction by any means possible. 2. Provide a continuation or continuity of instruction, if applicable/possible. 3. Assignments are now graded. Grading could be: a. Pass/Incomplete b. Letter grade with an opportunity to raise a grade. c. A student’s grades as of the 3rd quarter cannot be lowered, only raised. 4. Emphasis is on learning, not compliance. 5. A student’s grades will NOT be negatively impacted. 6. Students will be given the opportunity to raise their grade. Grades cannot be lowered. 7. Any assignments not completed by the due date will be given the opportunity to be made up. An “incomplete” will be given until the assignment is completed. Remote Learning, and the related communication, will be accomplished through various sources. We look to utilize technology as much as possible. However, we realize that not all households have the needed devices or internet connectivity to accomplish this goal. Therefore, Remote Learning Packets will be made available. The Remote Learning Packets will be delivered via bus routes on Friday, April 3rd. The buses will be running their afternoon routes at their regular times. Please meet the bus at your normal stop to obtain your packet. All packets not delivered on Friday will be brought back to the school for parent pickup. Please come to door #1 to obtain your child’s packet. Teachers will be in direct contact with their students throughout these Remote Learning Days. Communication will be made through TeacherEase and/or other means, including but not limited to Google Classroom, phone calls, other educational software platforms. Food service will continue as planned. Contact epattison@opaafood.com or the unit office to opt-in or opt-out of food service. Please contact the school at (217) 925-5249 if you have any questions or concerns. Mr. Cary Jackson, Superintendent

March 20, 2020 Re: COVID-19 Closure Good Afternoon, The state has now called for a “stay-at-home order”, meaning residents are to stay in their homes unless absolutely necessary. Residents can still go to the grocery stores, put gas in their cars, take walks outside and make pharmacy runs. All local roads, including the interstate highways and tollways, will remain open to traffic, as well. School closure was also extended. The tentative date for schools to re-open is now Wednesday, April 8th. Dieterich Schools will continue to provide meals to anyone who wants or needs them. If you would like to opt-in for meal delivery, please email epattison@opaafood.com or contact the school at (217) 925-5249. Just a reminder that you can opt-in or opt-out at any time throughout this mandated closure. Meal delivery will now be on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Deliveries should arrive at your home between 11am-1pm. Our teachers have been working from home to provide additional learning experiences for their students. We have amazingly creative teachers. They are dedicated to giving the students a continuity of education, as much as possible, during this challenging time. Please watch our Facebook, mobile app and website for additional information as it becomes available. Sincerely, Mr. Cary Jackson, Superintendent

If they read more than 60,0000 minutes in February, Mr. Benefiel would allow the student to tape him to the wall. The students were up to the challenge, and read more than 80,000 minutes, earning them the victory over their principal. The challenge was part of the Reach For The Stars reading program. We are now at the peak of cold and flu season. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines: We recommend keeping your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms: Fever greater than 100 degrees. Your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications. Vomiting (even once) Diarrhea Chills General malaise of feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, or muscle aches Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough To help prevent colds and flu, we recommend the following good hygiene habits be practiced and reinforced: Wash hands frequently Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a tissue, throw it away and then wash hands with soap and water Avoid close contact with people who are sick Bathe frequently from head to toe with soap and water Stay up to date on all immunizations If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school’s nurse. Congratulations to Brianna Wendte, Citizen Service Citation recipient! Brianna Wendte was recognized for her actions that made a difference in another citizen's life. McFarland said Wendte, on June 9, came across an accident that involved an elderly gentleman. She stopped and rendered aid, called authorities and gave him a bottle of water and made phone calls herself to be sure his family was contacted. “It's citizens like Brianna that go the extra mile and it is my pleasure as chief to be able to honor them,” said McFarland. “I understand this was your risk of being late for work.” The Good Samaritan said it was true, she was roughly an hour and half late for work that day.

Congratulations to Dieterich HS graduate Dalton Flach for being recognized for his outstanding work. 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Hamilton's Own Soldier of the Week is SGT Dalton Flach (13B). During the battery’s recent certification, SGT Flach was chosen above his peers to become the chief of section for Bravo 11 due to his technical and tactical expertise of the M109A7 howitzer. SGT Flach continuously and tirelessly studied the necessary manuals to ensure that he would be able to certify when the testing date arrived, and he did so with new section members whom he had previously not worked with. He quickly adapted to the new crew, and was able to lead them through the certification process successfully. SGT Flach’s ability to certify enabled Bravo Battery to remain lethal and ready to fight during the battery’s period of transition. His actions embody what it means to be a Big Red One Soldier and a member of Hamilton’s Own. #hamiltonsown #kingofbattle

We need your cooperation!! IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SCHOOL BOARD PERMISSION TO USE THE BALL FIELDS, PLEASE STAY OFF! Three individuals used the field on Sunday afternoon while it was too soft/wet. This caused additional labor hours from our coaching staff and maintenance to get it ready for Monday's game. The community just invested several thousand dollars in improving the fields. We need your cooperation in keeping them in the best condition they can be. Thanks for your help!

Wow! What a GREAT Community we have! We have had a great response to our plea for old yearbooks. We have been able to copy the 1940, were given the 1941, and have copied the 45, 46, and 47. We are still looking for 1942, 1943, 1944 and anything from the 1930's. Again, if you have access to these books and don't want to part with them, we would love to have the opportunity to copy them and give them back. Thanks so much to everyone who has helped us fill in these years of our school history!

DHS is in search of old yearbooks. Did you know that Dieterich High School had a yearbook called "The Goldenrod" in 1919? And from 1921-1929 the yearbooks were called the "Di-Hi-An", we actually had one of those mailed to us. And from 1941-1948 the yearbooks were called "The Black Cat". Most people were not aware that Dieterich had a high school or a yearbook in those years or that we were once called the Black Cats. If you have access to any these yearbooks and wouldn't mind sharing, we'd love to make copies. Please contact the High School office if you have access to any of these books.

We honor our veterans in Third grade by bringing in memorabilia and pictures of family and friends that have served in the military. It was such a special feeling to hear about our American soldiers. We heard stories about soldiers from wartime and peace time. Today we were even able to touch a piece of history from World War 2. One of our students, Jaden Ordner brought in a Nazi flag captured by his Great Grandfather. To see this up close is rare indeed. Thank you to all those who have served in our Military! #respect

Dieterich CU #30 Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to its school library patrons. The new service includes free tests specifically based on the state’s DMV materials. Driving-Tests.org is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that let users hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask portions of the screen for greater visibility on the practice tests. This partnership allows the Dieterich CU #30 Library to harness the power of Driving-Tests.org’s specialized practice exams to turn new drivers into safer drivers. The new program will work as an outreach to several valued groups of patrons, including teens, those with disabilities and senior citizens who need to take a renewal exam, as well as patrons at every other stage of life. Driving-Tests.org is a part of Elegant E-Learning, Inc., an eight-year-old company with a proven track record of revolutionizing online resources for learner drivers. Driving-Tests.org is part of a plan to improve global driver safety by providing free practice tests written by experts to anyone who wants to study, along with online copies of official study guides. To help achieve this goal, the company has also created driving practice sites for the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and India.
