A message from VILLAGE OF DIETERICH
For generations, the Dieterich 4th of July Celebration has been one of our community's most beloved traditions. From the July 3rd kickoff to the July 4th fireworks finale, the celebration brings our community together and attracts thousands of people from Dieterich and surrounding communities.
But like many community events, the cost of hosting the celebration continues to rise.
Despite tremendous support from local businesses, organizations and sponsors, the 2026 celebration ended with a deficit of more than $11,000.
At the same time, daytime attendance and spending at Liberty Park have declined in recent years. Many families attend the parade and fireworks but spend less time at the park during the day, often choosing to have family gatherings at home instead.
The reality is that we cannot continue losing thousands of dollars each year and expect this celebration to continue indefinitely.
The parade and fireworks are two of the most beloved parts of the celebration, but neither generates revenue to help pay for the event. Our primary source of revenue during the celebration itself is the beer garden. Often there are great ideas offered on how to raise more money during the event, but volunteers are not plentiful enough to make these other ideas and events possible.
With July 4th falling on a Sunday in 2027, we are looking at ways to change the format and schedule while preserving the traditions our community loves.
Before making any decisions, we want to hear from you.

The annual "Volley for a Cure" Volleyball game with Altamont is October 1st. It is Dieterich's turn to host and we have two families within our school family currently fighting the battle that we will donate the proceeds to. Two families, two moms of our students, two stage four diagnosis. The volleyball team is collecting donations in forms of money, baskets for a basket raffle, etc. There will be a pork burger sale, a 50/50 raffle, and other events during the game. If you would like to contribute please reach out to the volleyball team. Also, please come out to support these families and our volleyball girls October 1st. Games start at 5:00. Please see the attached flyer for more details. More information on the individual events like the pork burger sale will follow.

Dieterich Schools will be joining other local schools in supporting Mae's Miracle on Thursday, September 17. Mae and her family have ties to the Dieterich community. See flyers below for more information.
We at Dieterich Schools are saddened to hear of the passing of Gilbert Garbe. Mr. Garbe was a past graduate of Dieterich High School and was very instrumental in the founding of the Dieterich Community Education Foundation. As a champion for Dieterich Schools and a heart for children, Mr. Garbe helped to make it financially able for DHS graduates to attend college through scholarships that were created by the Education Foundation. Gilbert's impact will be felt for generations to come. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Garbe Family.

Dieterich Food Service Staff Wins Company Award!
The staff won "The Big Dill" award in Illinois for the month of August.
Nicole Logan, Operations Manager Illinois, was quoted as saying "Misty does an amazing job on a daily basis. She is a mentor to other directors and a huge asset to Opaa. Dieterich is also a Certified Training District for Opaa and helps train new directors and kitchen managers. She also has a great staff that is second to none. She has had a great start to the school year, and I can't wait to see what she can accomplish in the future. She makes my job easy. If only I could clone her... "

Students in Mr. Kimble's World History class became ancient Mesopotamian scribes this morning. The technique of record keeping in cuneiform was more challenging than they thought.
Parents, Carol Bohnhoff's bus is currently running approximately 10 minutes behind schedule.
When the Senior members of the Cheer & Dance Teams chose teachers they wanted to recognize for having an important impact on their years at Dieterich, a couple retired teachers names came up. One of those teachers, Mrs. Benefiel, happens to be subbing here today. Yes, she is still involved with our school and students in retirement. Abby and Kinley wanted to recognize Mrs. Benefiel for having an impact on their career at Dieterich High School.

Dieterich Jr-Sr High School had their first monthly drawing to reward lucky students who have been model Roadrunners or Maroons. Our winners this month were Lydia Kreke and Makayla Meinhart. These ladies walked away with gifts cards to The Maroon Spoon.
Introducing "Future Maroons Friday", where Dieterich high school student athletes and various club members may be greeting students as they arrive to school. Today members of the High School Cheer Team kicked it off, wonder who might be greeting them next Friday...
The Effingham County Farm Bureau Young Farmers invited our Driver’s Ed students to a Rural Road Safety Program on August 26th. Students had the opportunity to climb into the equipment to show the reduced visibility of large equipment operators. Presenters also pointed out safety features such as the SMV, turn signals, flashing lights, etc. Officer Lustig also discussed the hazards of traveling on rural roads and what to do when you meet farm equipment on the road. This was a great experience for our students.

Students also were able to stop by 7Brew for a little refreshment. Service here was absolutely amazing and all the students and staff appreciated the free drinks. We even were able to see a few familiar faces working there :) Thank you 7Brew for adding to our great day!
